How to Get Dual Subtitles on Netflix (2026 Guide)

Netflix does not show two subtitle languages at once. How to turn on bilingual subtitles in Chrome, which extensions to use, and how to fix missing captions.

Short answer: Netflix shows one subtitle language at a time, on every device. To see the original language and your language together, install a dual-subtitle extension in a desktop browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, depending on the tool). The official Netflix phone and TV apps cannot run extensions. Change your profile language first if the language you want is missing from the menu.

This page is Netflix-only. YouTube is different — it has Auto-translate, and some videos have no captions at all. That setup is in dual subtitles on YouTube and Netflix.

Disclosure: this guide is written by the LingTube team. LingTube is one of the extensions compared below. Netflix’s subtitle menus were checked in October 2026.

Netflix does not have dual subtitles

There is no hidden setting that shows two languages at once. Audio is one language. Subtitles are one language. That is true on the website, the apps, and the TV.

Two official options still help learners:

  1. Profile language. Netflix does not list every subtitle file it has. It shows a subset based on your region and the language of the profile. If Spanish (or Japanese, Korean, French, German, Chinese) is missing, open Manage Profiles → Language, switch the profile, then reopen the title.
  2. Dialogue-only original subtitles. In April 2025 Netflix started offering original-language subtitles that show spoken lines only, next to the CC/SDH option that also includes [door slams] and speaker names. For study, pick the dialogue-only option. It is cleaner to read and to pair with a second line.

Set the audio to the language you are learning. English audio plus your-language subtitles is translation practice, not listening practice.

How to get bilingual subtitles on Netflix (step by step)

These steps use LingTube. Language Reactor and Trancy follow the same shape: install, open Netflix in that browser, enter the tool’s study or subtitle mode.

  1. On a computer, install the LingTube extension in Chrome and pin it.
  2. Set the language you are learning and your native language.
  3. Open the title on netflix.com. Check the audio and subtitle menu. Prefer the dialogue-only original subtitles when Netflix offers them.
  4. Enter study mode. The original-language line and your-language line appear together.
  5. Tap a word or drag a phrase for a translation that uses the whole sentence as context. Replay the line from the keyboard when you miss it.

LingTube builds the second line from Netflix’s own subtitle files, not from a machine translation of the picture. If a title has no file in your language, you see the learning-language subtitles alone. That is stricter than auto-filling a missing language. It avoids a line that looks official and isn’t.

Other extensions may machine-translate missing captions. Convenient, and easier to get wrong.

What LingTube does not do on Netflix

Transcription, summaries, outlines, AI Q&A and simultaneous interpretation are YouTube only. Netflix already has subtitle files, so LingTube reads those instead of transcribing the episode again. On Netflix you still get dual subtitles, word and phrase translation, grammar analysis, danmaku, timestamped notes and shadowing. The study session built around those tools is in how to learn a language with Netflix.

Pick by constraint, not by feature count:

  • Only Netflix and YouTube, and you want the second line to be a real subtitle file: LingTube.
  • Disney+, Prime or course sites as well: Trancy or Funlingo.
  • You study on a phone: Trancy or Linglass. No browser extension will run inside the Netflix iOS/Android app.
  • You already like the classic Language Reactor layout: stay on it.

Phones, tablets and TV

This is the question that comes back in every Reddit thread.

  • iPhone, iPad, Android, smart TV: the official Netflix app will not show two subtitle languages, and it will not load Chrome extensions.
  • Workarounds that actually work: watch on a computer; cast the computer to the TV; or use a tool’s own mobile app (Trancy, Linglass) if it supports Netflix on that device.
  • “Netflix dual subtitles iPhone” search results that promise a hidden toggle inside the official app are wrong.

LingTube has no mobile app. If your only screen is a phone, it is the wrong tool today.

Dual subtitles not showing on Netflix

  • The language is missing from the menu. Change the profile language, wait a few seconds, reopen the title. VPN region changes also add or remove subtitle languages; that is a licensing issue, not an extension bug.
  • Two subtitle extensions at once. Disable the others and reload. They fight over the same subtitle layer.
  • You are in the mobile or TV app. Move to desktop Chrome.
  • The title has no original-language subtitles. Rare, but it happens on some licensed films. Dual subtitles need at least one written subtitle file. LingTube will not invent Netflix captions with speech recognition.

How to study with the second line (without just reading it)

The trap is staring at your native language for the whole episode. A short rule set:

  1. Audio in the language you are learning.
  2. Read that language’s line first. Use the translation for the words you missed, then look back up.
  3. Replay the line. Three loops of one sentence beat ten passive minutes.
  4. Hide the text once the show is easy enough. LingTube’s listening mask covers the subtitles until you ask for them.
  5. Say the line out loud. Shadowing is free in LingTube.

If the episode is mostly unknown words, it is too hard. That test is comprehensible input. For Spanish shows in particular, see learn Spanish with YouTube and Netflix.

FAQ

Does Netflix have dual subtitles?

No. One subtitle language at a time. A desktop extension adds the second line in the player.

How do I change the subtitle language on Netflix?

While the title is playing, open the audio and subtitles menu (speech-bubble icon) and pick a language. If the language is missing, change the profile language under Manage Profiles and reopen the title.

How do I translate subtitles for Netflix?

You cannot add new official captions. An extension either displays a second official file, or machine-translates the first one. LingTube uses Netflix’s own files when they exist.

Can I have two subtitles on the Netflix phone app?

Not in the official app. Use a computer, or a learning app that has its own Netflix-capable player.

What is the best free Netflix dual subtitle extension?

Language Reactor, Trancy, Funlingo and LingTube all include free dual subtitles on Netflix in a desktop browser. Trancy and Funlingo cover more streaming sites. LingTube’s free plan also includes danmaku and shadowing; its AI tools are paid, with 3 days of Premium for new accounts.
